Why I stayed at ‘struggling’ Man Utd and didn’t think we’d be third now – Fernandes
Bruno Fernandes has shared his thoughts on the journey of Manchester United this season, reflecting on his decision to remain with the club despite its challenges. The Portuguese midfielder, who has become a key figure in United’s revival, expressed surprise at the team’s current position in the league table.
A Legacy of Leadership
Both Fernandes and Wayne Rooney have played pivotal roles as leaders at Old Trafford. Their contributions have been instrumental in guiding the team through its recent struggles and toward a brighter future. Rooney, a former captain, and Fernandes, the current one, share a unique bond that stretches beyond their roles as key players.
Fernandes and Rooney first connected in June 2004, when the young Portuguese football enthusiast watched the Euro 2004 quarter-final in Lisbon. England were leading until Rooney suffered a foot injury, allowing Portugal to clinch the match on penalties. This moment left a lasting impression on Fernandes, who recalls it as his initial memory of the Portugal national team.
“That was my first memory of the Portugal team playing,” Fernandes said. “I shouldn’t say this, but when England lost on penalties, I was in my grandma’s house with my cousins. We ran outside in the streets screaming.”
“I was in hospital,” Rooney replied. “In a Portuguese hospital, still in my England kit, watching on a little TV.”
Their shared experiences have forged a mutual respect that shines through their conversations. During a 40-minute chat for The Wayne Rooney Show, they discussed their roles as inspirations for the club. Together, they have made a combined 881 appearances for United, with Rooney holding the record for most goals scored (253) and Fernandes set to challenge a significant milestone in the Premier League.
A Choice to Stay
At the end of last season, Fernandes faced an enticing offer from Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro-League. Club officials indicated they would not block his departure if he chose to pursue the opportunity. However, the 31-year-old opted to stay, mirroring Rooney’s decision in 2010 when he remained at United despite interest from other clubs.
“I stayed because I thought I still had something that I can give back to the club,” Fernandes explained. “The Saudi situation, with the money… there was a lot. But my wife is pretty down to earth like me. We’re very aware that we don’t want to be the richest person in the world. We just want to be the ones that have achieved the dreams they had and live a good life with their kids.”
His wife’s words resonated deeply, reinforcing his commitment to the team’s progress. Fernandes emphasized the importance of family values in his decision-making, stating, “That small thing she said made me understand that she’s on the same page as me. Let’s keep trying and see where this takes me.”
The struggle to lift the club from its 15th-place finish last season was a major factor in Fernandes’ choice. He admitted, “I didn’t want to leave the club at the point where we were struggling.” His determination to help United reclaim its former glory has been evident this campaign, and with a year remaining on his contract, the future looks promising.
United’s co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has been focused on reducing wage costs, but Fernandes’ performances have made it unlikely they will let him go. If he secures three more assists in the final five games of the season, he could surpass the record for most in a single Premier League campaign, further cementing his status as a vital asset for the club.
