OpenAI apologizes for not reporting Canada mass shooter
British Columbia Premier David Eby highlighted that OpenAI had the chance to prevent the mass shooting. Following the incident in Tumbler Ridge, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman extended an apology to the community. The shooting, which occurred on February 10, resulted in eight fatalities. The perpetrator, an 18-year-old transgender woman, killed her mother and stepbrother at home before proceeding to a local secondary school and opening fire. Five children and a teacher were also fatally injured, with the attacker taking her own life afterward.
After the attack, OpenAI stated it had detected the suspect’s account via its abuse detection systems and banned it in June—eight months prior to the shooting. However, the company did not notify Canadian authorities at the time, citing that the activity did not reach the threshold for law enforcement referral. Altman expressed regret, stating,
“I am deeply sorry that we did not alert law enforcement to the account that was banned in June.”
He acknowledged the apology was “necessary, and yet grossly insufficient” according to Eby.
OpenAI’s moderation systems analyze content in real time, restricting or banning accounts for rule violations. These include sexual exploitation, encouragement of self-harm, and promotion of violence. In severe cases, high-risk behavior is flagged for human review. If a credible threat is identified, the company may share account data with authorities. Following the tragedy, Canadian officials summoned OpenAI’s safety team and warned of potential regulatory measures if improvements were not implemented. The company pledged to enhance its protocols and established a direct line for police communication.
The family of a girl severely injured in the shooting has filed a negligence lawsuit against the U.S.-based tech giant. Altman emphasized the company’s commitment to preventing similar events, saying,
“Going forward, our focus will continue to be on working with all levels of government to help ensure something like this never happens again.”
OpenAI also mentioned its efforts to improve safety measures, including the creation of a dedicated channel for law enforcement collaboration.
