India news: Raghav Chadha, 6 other AAP MPs join BJP

Seven members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have left the group, impacting its presence in the Rajya Sabha and raising concerns about political volatility. The latest development includes the resignation of Raghav Chadha, a notable AAP MP, who has now aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alongside six additional legislators. This shift marks a pivotal moment, as the party’s strength in the upper chamber has plummeted from 10 to just three members.

Strategic Merger Averts Legal Challenges

Chadha’s decision follows his removal as the Rajya Sabha’s deputy leader three weeks prior. The timing of his departure is critical, coinciding with the impending 2027 state elections in Punjab—a region traditionally dominated by AAP. By merging two-thirds of their ranks with the BJP, the departing MPs can sidestep the anti-defection law, which shields Rajya Sabha members from disqualification if their party’s legislators approve the shift.

Heatwave Alert in Delhi

Meanwhile, Delhi faces a heatwave warning as northern temperatures rise sharply. Authorities have issued alerts for the capital, where daytime highs are projected to reach between 42 and 44 degrees Celsius, while nighttime lows may hover around 25.2 degrees Celsius. The political upheaval and weather conditions highlight the dynamic challenges shaping the nation’s headlines today.

“Welcome to the latest updates from India, Midhat from New Delhi reports. The weather has intensified in the north, prompting heatwave alerts for the capital. Expect peak temperatures between 42 and 44°C, with nighttime readings remaining steady at 25.2°C.”
