Seven Dead in Major Russian Attack on Ukraine
At least seven individuals lost their lives in Russian aerial assaults across Ukraine during the night, with five casualties reported in the central city of Dnipro. Officials there confirmed an apartment building was struck, leaving the area in chaos. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as lasting “practically all night,” and rescue teams were still combing through debris in Dnipro on Saturday morning in search of survivors.
British fighter jets were launched from Romania as Russian drones approached the border, though the UK Ministry of Defence denied reports that any had been intercepted. Meanwhile, Ukraine launched some of its longest-range drone strikes into Russian territory, targeting locations far from the border. In Yekaterinburg, a building was hit, injuring six people, while nearby Chelyabinsk reported drones attacking an industrial site that were successfully intercepted.
Russian missiles and drones also struck the northern city of Chernihiv, resulting in two fatalities, as well as Odesa and Kharkiv. Ukrainian officials stated they neutralized the majority of over 600 Russian drones, indicating this was the most significant offensive in recent days. Zelensky posted on social media: “The Russians’ tactics remain unchanged: deploying drones, cruise missiles, and a substantial volume of ballistic weapons. Most of the targets are ordinary infrastructure in cities. Residential buildings, energy, and enterprises have been damaged.”
The Russian military reported downing 127 drones across over a dozen regions. Additionally, it claimed to have seized control of Bochkove, a village in the Kharkiv region, on Saturday morning, as per Tass. The settlement is near Ukraine’s northern border with Russia, where invading forces have made repeated attempts to advance toward Kharkiv. Ukrainian authorities have not commented on Russia’s claim, nor has BBC News been able to independently verify it.
Romania’s defense ministry announced an investigation into “an object’s fall” on its soil near the Ukrainian border during the assault. It also revised a prior statement that seemed to imply British jets in the country had downed Russian drones, noting that the aircraft “did not enter Ukrainian airspace” and “no drones were intercepted by the jets, as the drones did not cross into Romanian airspace.”
As peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine remain stalled, Kyiv continues to pursue international support for its military campaigns. On Friday, Zelensky engaged in a second meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, aiming to solidify alliances with Gulf states. The Gulf nations, recently targeted by Iranian strikes, have shown increased interest in Ukraine’s drone warfare capabilities. During the discussion, both leaders focused on enhancing air defense collaboration and co-producing military equipment, according to an official summary.
