‘I like surprises’ – Wiegman calls up 17-year-old Parkinson

Sarina Wiegman embraced the element of surprise

England’s Women’s World Cup squad for the upcoming qualifiers against Spain and Iceland has been announced, with a notable inclusion that has sparked interest. Manager Sarina Wiegman, known for her open-minded approach, admitted to relishing the unexpected by selecting Erica Meg Parkinson, a 17-year-old midfielder from Portugal, to join the 23-player team.

Emerging talent from the Portuguese league

Erica Meg Parkinson, who plays for Valadares Gaia in the Portuguese top division, is not a household name yet. However, she has been part of England’s youth setup, most recently representing the under-23 squad. Her call-up comes as a result of injuries to key players like Ella Toone and Grace Clinton, creating space for new faces.

“For every young player entering the senior squad, it’s a significant leap. It brings some nerves, but that’s entirely natural. I just hope she adapts quickly and embraces the opportunity,” said Wiegman.

A multicultural journey and rapid development

born in Singapore to an English father and a Japanese mother, Parkinson is eligible to represent multiple nations. Her talent has been recognized in England’s youth teams, where she has earned 44 caps. Despite her young age, she has already demonstrated maturity, sharing her thoughts with the media in November about her international aspirations.

“I think she’s ready. She’s speechless when I told her, but she’s excited. It’s not about forcing her into a role; it’s about letting her prove herself,” added Wiegman.

FA’s strategic scouting and Wiegman’s confidence

The Football Association has taken proactive steps, sending scouts to Valadares Gaia to evaluate Parkinson’s performance. While Wiegman emphasized that the senior call-up wasn’t rushed, the FA’s timing likely considered the risk of other countries snapping up the versatile player. Known for her technical skills and aggressive style, Parkinson is seen as a dynamic addition to the team.

Choosing England: A decision rooted in experience

When asked about her potential international future, Parkinson highlighted England’s professionalism, citing their facilities, playing style, and organizational ethos as key factors in her choice. Her ability to speak four languages, a legacy of her multicultural upbringing, adds to her unique profile.

With the squad trimmed to 23, Liverpool captain Grace Fisk and London City Lionesses defender Poppy Pattinson were left out. Wiegman aims to maintain this smaller group for the 2027 World Cup, experimenting slightly in recent friendlies while prioritizing depth and adaptability. The question remains: can Parkinson seize this chance to make her mark on the international stage?
