Islanders snap up free bananas after shop orders 38,000 by mistake
Free Banana Frenzy in Orkney as Shop Mistake Leads to 38,000 Fruit Distribution
A supermarket in Orkney has unexpectedly distributed approximately 38,000 bananas in three days following a misordered shipment. The error occurred when Tesco in Kirkwall intended to order 380kg (750lbs) of the fruit but accidentally received 380 wholesale boxes, each holding around 100 bananas. The surplus arrived over the weekend, but ferry disruptions due to high winds prevented their return to the mainland.
Paula Clarke, Tesco Kirkwall’s community champion, announced on Tuesday that all the boxes had been allocated to local groups and educational institutions. The distribution was organized after an online plea posted on Saturday morning invited community organizations to collect boxes at no cost. From toddler programs to football teams and charitable groups, numerous organizations arrived at the store to claim their share.
In social media comments, residents suggested creative uses for the bananas, such as banana bread baking and freezing them for later consumption. Some even joked about the sheer volume, highlighting how the island’s population could barely consume the entire stock. School teachers shared that several boxes had already been claimed by students, with the Orkney Islands Council confirming their arrival at Stromness Academy, Kirkwall Grammar School, and Papdale Halls of Residence.
To ensure the final boxes reached the remote North Ronaldsay island, Tesco arranged for them to be flown there on Tuesday morning. This incident follows a similar error two years ago when a Sanday shop inadvertently ordered 720 Easter Eggs instead of 80, sparking a charity fundraising effort. Unlike the Easter Egg mishap, the banana surplus required a quicker resolution due to its shorter shelf life.
“We wanted to ensure the bananas were distributed swiftly before they went to waste,” said Paula Clarke, Tesco Kirkwall’s community champion.
