Woods to ‘step away and seek treatment’ after crash

Tiger Woods has announced he will take a temporary break to undergo treatment and concentrate on his health following a car accident in Florida. The 50-year-old golfer was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after his vehicle collided with a truck and overturned on Friday. Additional charges include property damage and refusal to comply with a breath test. Woods’ legal team submitted a written plea of not guilty on Tuesday.

A police report released earlier that day outlined Woods’ actions post-crash. It stated he had two hydrocodone pills in his pocket—opioids used for severe pain—and was observed by officers to be “lethargic and slow,” with “extremely dilated” pupils and “profuse” sweating. The incident marked his first public comment since the accident, with Woods expressing awareness of the gravity of his situation via a statement on X.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary to prioritise my well-being and work toward lasting recovery,” he wrote.

Before the crash, Woods had not excluded the possibility of competing in next month’s Masters tournament. However, he has been absent from major championships since missing the cut at The Open in July 2024. In his statement, he emphasized his commitment to returning in a healthier, stronger, and more focused state, both personally and professionally.

The golfer also requested privacy for his family, loved ones, and himself during this time. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
