Funeral director admits preventing 30 burials and theft
Key charges and guilty plea
Robert Bush, 48, has acknowledged obstructing the burials of 30 bodies and siphoning donations from charitable contributions by mourners. The charges stem from an investigation by Humberside Police into Hull-based Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, initiated after concerns were raised about the handling of deceased individuals in March 2024. Bush, who previously resided in East Yorkshire and now lives in West Yorkshire, pleaded guilty to 30 counts of hindering proper burial procedures and one theft offense tied to charitable funds.
Previous convictions and court appearance
Bush had earlier confessed to 35 fraud cases involving deceptive practices and another for operating a funeral plan scheme. Despite these admissions, he contested the latest charges related to burial obstruction and theft. During his court appearance, Bush, clad in a dark grey suit, white shirt, and mauve tie, remained composed, with his left hand resting on his right. The courtroom included around a dozen family members of the affected individuals.
Investigation findings
The case emerged from a significant probe that uncovered human remains at the funeral home, including four stillborn infants. Humberside Police confirmed all charges spanned from May 2012 to 6 March 2024. The judge, Mr Justice Hilliard, noted that a “custodial sentence is inevitable in this case” before granting Bush temporary release on bail.
His sentencing is scheduled for 27 July, following the guilty plea. The investigation revealed the remains of four babies lost during pregnancy, raising questions about the facility’s practices. Police emphasized the timeline of charges, which stretched over a dozen years, highlighting the scale of the alleged misconduct. The case has drawn attention to the role of funeral directors in ensuring dignified treatment of the deceased.
“A custodial sentence is inevitable in this case,” stated Mr Justice Hilliard during the court proceedings.
