Iconic Greek singer Marinella dies aged 87
Family announces passing of beloved artist
Marinella, a renowned Greek singer, has died at the age of 87, according to her family. Their statement revealed the news with heartfelt emotion, emphasizing her role as a cherished mother and grandmother.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of Marinella, our beloved mother and grandmother, who passed away at her home today, 28 March 2026 at 6 pm,” the family said.
A legacy in Greek folk music
Born Kyriaki Papadopoulou in 1938 in Thessaloniki, Marinella became one of Greece’s most revered figures in popular folk music. Her career spanned over six decades, marked by 66 solo albums and partnerships with celebrated composers.
Among her collaborators were Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarhakos, and Manos Hadjidakis, names synonymous with Greek musical excellence. She also made history by representing her country in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974.
Stroke ends her performing career
Marinella’s health declined in September 2024 when she suffered a stroke during a performance at Athens’ ancient Odeon theatre. The incident required hospitalization for four months, but she never regained her strength. Her final days were spent in comfort at home, surrounded by loved ones.
