French authorities foil bomb attack outside Bank of America branch in Paris
French authorities prevent bombing attempt near Bank of America in Paris
A potential bombing was thwarted by French police early Saturday as they detained an individual attempting to detonate an improvised explosive device outside a US bank branch. The incident took place at approximately 3:30 am CET on Rue de la Boétie, in the 8th district of Paris, located near the iconic Champs-Élysées.
The suspect, who had positioned the device, was apprehended moments before activation. The explosive consisted of five liters of liquid, likely fuel, combined with an ignition mechanism, as reported by AFP. The counter-terrorism prosecutor’s office in France has now assumed responsibility for the ongoing investigation.
Minister praises swift response amid heightened security
“The police’s quick action is a testament to the vigilance maintained in our country,” stated Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. He emphasized that France’s heightened alert level stems from the current geopolitical climate, particularly the ongoing Iran conflict, which has prompted European nations to bolster domestic security measures.
Nuñez highlighted the critical role of Paris judicial police and the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI) in the probe, noting that the situation underscores the importance of continuous preparedness. The incident marks another instance of security agencies acting swiftly to neutralize threats in the heart of the French capital.
