Arrest after man and girl die in pony and trap crash

A truck driver has been arrested after a young girl and a man in his 30s travelling in a pony and trap died in a crash. Kent Police said the incident happened in East Peckham, near Tonbridge, just before 18:30 BST on 1 April. The force said a white DAF tipper truck was driving southbound on A228 Boyle Way, between the Bandridges Road and Hale Street junctions, when it collided with a pony and trap travelling in the same direction.

A young girl and woman in the trap were taken to hospital, where the child was confirmed dead. The man in his 30s died at the scene. The woman remains in a critical condition, officers said.

The pony also died at the scene. The driver of the tipper, a 29-year-old man from Kent, was arrested in connection with the incident and taken into custody. The force said an investigation was under way and appealed for witnesses or anyone who saw the truck or pony and trap before the crash to get in contact.
