Arrest in Tyne-Wear derby racist abuse probe

Northumbria Police have detained a 45-year-old man from Gateshead over allegations of racist abuse toward a Newcastle United player during the recent Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park. The incident occurred in the 52nd minute of the match on 22 March, when the game was temporarily halted due to a reported racist remark directed at visiting Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida.

The Premier League contest between Newcastle and Sunderland was paused by referee Anthony Taylor, who followed the competition’s anti-discrimination protocol by stopping play for three minutes. This followed an earlier stoppage in the second half as Newcastle’s Sven Botman received treatment. Taylor then engaged with both sets of coaching staff, the accused player, and Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka before resuming the match.

The man was released on police bail pending further investigation into the racially aggravated public order offence. Following the incident, both clubs expressed condemnation of racism, with Sunderland stating:

“We stand with Lutsharel, who has our complete backing, and we commend him for displaying bravery and leadership by reporting this incident to the match officials.”

Despite the disruption, Sunderland secured a 2-1 victory to complete their double over Newcastle this season. The club reiterated its commitment to tackling discriminatory behavior in football, while the police emphasized the seriousness of the offense and the ongoing inquiry.
