Baby Fatally Shot in Pram During Brooklyn Traffic Incident

Authorities have confirmed that a seven-month-old infant was killed by gunfire while seated in her stroller during a daylight incident in Brooklyn, New York City. The police commissioner described the event as a tragic accident linked to a potential gang-related shooting, where the child became a collateral casualty.

Shooting Details and Suspect Capture

Footage from the scene reveals two individuals riding a motorbike in the opposite direction of traffic within the Williamsburg district. A man positioned behind the rider discharged at least two shots, according to police. The vehicle then collided with a barrier, leading to the arrest of the gunman, though a search continued for the driver.

“A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant,” said New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, reflecting on the profound impact of the incident. “Today is a devastating reminder of how much more work there is to be done to combat gun violence across this city.”

Witness Accounts and Immediate Response

The shooting occurred on a street corner where several adults and children, including two in strollers, were present. The baby’s parents fled to a nearby store, where they discovered their child had been struck by a bullet to the head, as reported by the BBC’s US partner, CBS. A witness recounted, “All the kids started ducking in the corner. The family went to the store and the mom started screaming when she noticed the baby was bleeding from [her] head.”

Emergency responders arrived approximately 13:21 local time (17:21 GMT) and transported the child to Woodhull Hospital, where she was declared deceased. No other individuals were reported injured or killed in the event. Police noted that the suspects fled the scene before crashing into a vehicle, with both being thrown from the moped.

Investigation and Suspect Connection

The rear passenger sustained such a forceful impact that he lost both of his shoes, as stated by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. An ambulance was dispatched for an injured male, who was taken to Brooklyn Hospital. Though initially linked to an unrelated case, investigators believe he matches the description of the shooter based on his attire and appearance, now connecting him to the fatal incident.

“As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain that this family is feeling or the grief that they now carry with them,” Tisch added, underscoring the emotional weight of the tragedy.
