Balamory is back – Miss Hoolie and PC Plum lift the lid on what to expect

The beloved children’s TV show Balamory is making a return this month, bringing its colorful island community back to screens. Julie Wilson Nimmo, known as Miss Hoolie, recalls the enduring question fans have asked for two decades: “What’s the story in Balamory?” It’s a phrase that continues to spark nostalgia, as the show once captivated millions worldwide.

Balamory, which aired on CBeebies, featured residents solving daily challenges through camaraderie and creativity. After a long hiatus, the series is set to reintroduce its iconic characters, including Penny Pocket and Edie McCredie. Andrew Agnew, who portrayed PC Plum, is thrilled to reprise his role, calling it “an honour to be back doing something we love so much.”

Revival Amid Challenges

Television producers have revived the show, aiming to reconnect with a new audience. “Children are surrounded by animation now, which is great,” says Wilson Nimmo. “But shows that feature kids watching kids are rarer these days.” This timing coincides with a BBC report highlighting the struggles of UK-made children’s content, which faces reduced funding from both public and commercial broadcasters.

The original series achieved massive popularity, drawing two million weekly viewers in the UK and a global following. Wilson Nimmo and Agnew hope the revival will appeal to younger generations, with Wilson Nimmo describing it as “a love letter to the original.” The show’s international success even led to global recognition, including encounters with The Wiggles in Australia and a memorable moment in Turkey where a child identified Agnew as PC Plum.

Returning Cast and New Faces

The reunion of the cast during the script read-through was emotional, with Wilson Nimmo recalling the nostalgic impact of hearing familiar tunes. “The nostalgia buzz was real,” she says, highlighting the enduring appeal of the show’s music.

While some original cast members are back, others have moved on. Actor Miles Jupp, who played Archie, is absent, but his legacy lives on through Ava Potts, the new inventor. Agnew confirms the addition of new characters, such as Dr. Ollie and The Harbourmaster, adding fresh elements to the series.

“There are new songs as well and new takes on the songs,” Agnew explains, noting they’ve been updated to reflect modern sensibilities. The original cast, however, still remembers the older lyrics by heart, a testament to the show’s lasting impact.

Balamory is set to air on CBeebies on Monday, April 20th, with all 10 episodes available on BBC iPlayer simultaneously. With its mix of returning stars and new stories, the revival promises to honor the past while embracing the future.
