BBC Announces Editor of Radio 4’s Today Programme

The BBC has appointed Rebecca Keating as the new editor of the Radio 4 Today programme, a role she will take on following her tenure as assistant editor on several of the corporation’s prominent news broadcasts. With nearly two decades of experience at the BBC, Keating has contributed to a range of key programmes, including The World at One, PM, Broadcasting House, and The World This Weekend. Her work also extends to past senior positions on BBC One’s news at Six and Ten, as well as Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.

Keating’s Vision for the Programme

In a statement, Keating reflected on her journey, saying: “When I first joined Today as an output editor nearly a decade ago, I never anticipated being entrusted with the responsibility of steering the programme.” She emphasized the programme’s vital role in the current media climate: “In a divided landscape, where truth is often contested, Today’s mission to challenge authority and facilitate societal discourse remains as crucial as ever.”

“I look forward to collaborating with Amol, Anna, Emma, Justin, and Nick, alongside the programme’s highly skilled production team, to ensure Today continues to evolve and thrive,” she added.

The Today programme retains its position as the BBC’s leading radio news service, with recent Rajar data highlighting 5.61 million listeners tuning in during the final three months of 2025. Keating’s career at the BBC has included covering major events such as the death of Queen Elizabeth II, national elections, and conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and Iran, having previously worked with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

John McAndrew, the BBC’s director of live and daily news, praised Keating’s appointment, stating that her leadership could help “attract fresh audiences across all platforms while safeguarding Today’s enduring legacy and its special connection to listeners.” Keating will succeed Owenna Griffiths, who led the programme for over five years.
