BBC tours Orion spacecraft model ahead of Artemis II return
Artemis II Astronauts Set to Return to Earth on April 10
Following a successful launch from Florida, the Artemis II crew is preparing for their return to Earth on 10 April. This mission marks the first crewed lunar voyage in half a century, with the Orion spacecraft serving as their vessel. During re-entry, the shield’s underside will face extreme heat, reaching nearly 5,000F (2,760C) as it travels at speeds exceeding 25,000 mph.
At the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, the BBC conducted a tour of the Orion model. The crew members shared video messages with their families, offering insights into their experiences during the journey. The spacesuits designed for this mission are engineered to safeguard astronauts during launch, landing, and emergency situations.
Preparing for the Mission
Training for Artemis II took place at the Johnson Space Center, beginning shortly after the crew was announced in 2023. NASA astronauts performed various tests on board the spacecraft, including simulating maneuvers. The BBC’s Leyla Khodabakhshi engaged with locals and visitors in Florida, documenting the anticipation before the mission’s launch.
Behind the Scenes
During the mission, NASA scientists introduced a new “universal waste management system,” dubbed the space loo, to handle onboard waste. Meanwhile, the former prosecutor maintained a close connection with President Trump, having represented him in the hush-money case. The US aims to achieve its first lunar landing with humans by 2028, setting ambitious goals for future exploration.
Public and Political Reactions
Large protests against the Trump administration occurred nationwide, highlighting the third round of No Kings rallies. The airport faced prolonged delays due to a partial government shutdown, with TSA agents working without pay. Conservatives at the CPAC conference in Texas expressed mixed views on the current economic climate.
“The reactions come after a Los Angeles jury found that Meta and Google intentionally built addictive social media platforms that harm young people’s mental health.”
