Be serious… don’t speak every day’: Macron criticises Trump approach to Iran war

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a steadfast strategy in addressing the conflict with Iran, critiquing US President Donald Trump’s shifting rhetoric. Speaking during a state visit to South Korea, Macron highlighted the need for stability in decision-making, contrasting it with the erratic communication style of Trump.

“This is not a show. We are discussing war, peace, and the lives of individuals,” Macron remarked. “When you want to be serious, you don’t say the opposite of what you said the day before. And perhaps you shouldn’t speak every day—you should allow things to settle.”

Macron’s remarks followed Trump’s inconsistent statements on the war, which have fluctuated between claims of imminent ceasefire, victory, and ongoing commitment. The French leader argued that such variability undermines the credibility of the US stance, especially as the conflict enters its second month.

While France and European allies have endorsed certain US actions in the region, they have avoided direct involvement in the war. Macron emphasized the importance of trust in alliances, referencing Trump’s recent doubts about NATO. “Alliances like NATO hold value because of the unspoken trust they represent,” he stated. “Constantly questioning your commitment to them weakens their essence.”

Macron also pointed out that partners should act on agreements rather than dwell on daily comments. “You don’t need to comment every day to assert whether you’ll uphold them,” he said, suggesting that such frequent dialogue creates confusion rather than clarity.

Additionally, Macron dismissed Trump’s criticism of his personal life, calling it “neither elegant nor up to standard.” The president’s remarks, which mocked Macron’s wife Brigitte and his physical demeanor, were met with strong disapproval in France. Even critics of Macron defended his dignity, with Manuel Bompard of France Unbowed condemning the attack as “absolutely unacceptable.”

Strait of Hormuz Closure and Military Response

Tehran retaliated against US strikes by closing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy passage. Macron opposed the idea of a military operation to reopen it, labeling it “unrealistic” due to its duration and risks. “Crossing the strait would expose individuals to coastal threats from the Revolutionary Guards, ballistic missiles, and other dangers,” he warned.

Trump, meanwhile, urged affected nations to resolve the closure independently. Macron countered that a joint effort is necessary to address the underlying nuclear issue, stressing the need for international oversight to ensure Iran’s enrichment program is contained.
