Canada’s New Democratic Party Elects Avi Lewis as New Leader

Following significant setbacks in the recent federal election, Canada’s left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP) has selected Avi Lewis as its new leader. Lewis secured 56% of the ballots in a decisive first-round vote, surpassing MP Heather McPherson and three other candidates. His campaign centered on reviving the party’s fortunes by focusing on worker protections in the era of artificial intelligence, halting new pipeline projects, and promoting non-profit grocery stores under public ownership.

Party’s Current Challenges

The NDP, which once served as the primary opposition in 2011, now holds just six seats in the federal House of Commons. After the 2025 election, the party lost 17 seats overall, with 10 shifting to the Conservatives and seven to the Liberals. According to a Nanos poll from March 20, the party currently trails both major parties at 12% voter support.

“I know every politician says they feel your pain, and they claim to be outraged by the sky-high price of everything, but what they won’t talk about is why an economy that’s rigged for the rich is leaving the vast majority of us behind,” Lewis said.

Despite federal losses, provincial NDP branches remain strong, with the party governing in British Columbia and Manitoba. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew holds the highest approval rating among Canadian leaders, at 61%. Lewis, 58, faces the task of rebuilding the party’s influence and reinvigorating its voter base.
