Coachella Kicks Off with Sabrina Carpenter and Surprise Guests

The annual Coachella music festival began its 2024 edition on Friday, featuring a memorable twist as actor Susan Sarandon joined pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter’s headlining set. Sarandon took the stage in a dramatic role, portraying an older version of the 26-year-old singer during her performance. This cinematic element was part of a broader Hollywood-inspired theme, with comedian Will Ferrell and veteran actor Sam Elliott also making appearances.

As the festival unfolded in the California desert, it attracted over 100,000 attendees each day across two weekends, according to Indio city police. However, weather disruptions added an unexpected challenge. Strong winds forced the cancellation of DJ Anyma’s set following Carpenter’s performance. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival released a statement via Instagram, explaining:

“Due to strong wind conditions affecting Anyma’s stage build, he is unable to perform tonight. Coachella and Anyma have made this decision together with your safety as the priority.”

The National Weather Service had predicted wind gusts of around 25 mph, prompting an air quality advisory for the Coachella Valley from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning. The advisory highlighted potential health risks for vulnerable groups, warning that airborne particles could lead to asthma attacks, lung issues, and other respiratory complications. Despite the warning, local air quality levels were rated as good to moderate from Thursday noon onward.

For the opening act, Carpenter transformed the Empire Polo Club stage into a Hollywood Hills setting, dubbing it “Sabrinawood.” Her performance included a short film where she was pulled over by Sam Elliott, only to be let go and then step onto the main stage. Later, Will Ferrell joined as a mock electrician, adding a comedic touch. Additional acts on Friday included the global girl group KATSEYE and British artist Disclosure. The weekend’s schedule continued with Justin Bieber on Saturday and Karol G on Sunday, while UK acts like Wet Leg and Little Simz also performed.

The festival, held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, has been a staple since 2002. This year’s line-ups will repeat next weekend, offering fans a chance to experience the event again with familiar acts and fresh surprises.
