Congressman Eric Swalwell quits California governor race amid sexual misconduct claims

Eric Swalwell Withdraws from California Governor Race Over Sexual Misconduct Allegations

California’s Democratic congressman, Eric Swalwell, has ended his bid for governor after facing mounting scrutiny over sexual misconduct claims. Four women have alleged that he engaged in behaviors ranging from harassment to sexual assault. Despite denying the accusations and promising to rely on “facts” in his defense, his campaign faced renewed pressure from key allies to exit the race. This decision marks a critical shift in the Democratic primary contest, as voters prepare to cast mail ballots in the upcoming election on 2 June.

The 2 June election will determine the next leader of the nation’s most populous state, succeeding outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom. Swalwell, once seen as a prominent contender, now steps aside amid heightened debate over the allegations. His departure follows a period of intense political tension, with his campaign’s momentum reportedly waning under the weight of the accusations.

“I am suspending my campaign for Governor,” Swalwell stated in a message on X. “To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made – but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”

The timing of his exit has sparked discussions about the impact of personal controversies on political aspirations. As the primary race remains highly competitive, Swalwell’s withdrawal could reshape the field, with other candidates now gaining ground in the final stretch before the vote.
