Djibouti’s president wins unprecedented sixth term with 97.8% of vote

Djibouti’s President Wins Sixth Term with Overwhelming Majority

Early results from Djibouti’s recent election confirm President Ismail Omar Guelleh’s re-election, securing his fifth consecutive term as head of state. The 78-year-old leader, who has governed the country for 27 years, received 97.8% of the vote, with his sole rival, Mohamed Farah Samatar, securing just 2.19%. Opposition parties, including the main contenders, boycotted the poll, citing concerns over restricted political freedoms since 2016.

Guelleh’s campaign emphasized his role in ensuring regional stability, a feat highlighted against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and other parts of Africa. Djibouti’s strategic position near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait places it as a vital link to the Suez Canal, a key shipping artery. The nation hosts military bases of the US, China, France, Italy, and Japan, reflecting its importance in international trade and security. This is Guelleh’s second presidency since the country’s independence from France in 1977.

“This victory belongs to the entire nation,” Guelleh stated after celebrating his win at his residence. The interior ministry announced the results, but the constitutional council must validate them before his swearing-in ceremony for a new five-year term. Over 80% of registered voters participated in the ballot, though the opposition’s absence left the process without a significant challenge.

Samatar, representing a small party with no parliamentary representation, has not yet made public comments. The constitutional amendment in November, which removed the 75-year age cap for presidential candidates, allowed Guelleh to run again. His 2021 election saw a comparable margin of support, reinforcing his stronghold in the political landscape.
