Dogs Found Crammed in Living Room ‘Doing Really Well’, Says RSPCA

A rescue operation involving 250 dogs from a cramped UK home has seen them thrive, according to the RSPCA. The animal welfare charity shared an update with the BBC, highlighting that the poodle crossbreeds—discovered in January at an unspecified location—were in surprisingly good condition despite their crowded living situation.

“The dogs are fine and doing really, really well,” stated Lee Hopgood, the RSPCA’s operational superintendent for the North of England, during a BBC Breakfast segment. However, he noted that many required medical attention due to matted and crusted coats, a sign of poor living conditions.

Of the rescued animals, 87 were placed under the RSPCA’s care, while the rest were transferred to Dogs Trust. The trust reported that several dogs have since found new homes, expressing satisfaction with their recovery. “Many of the dogs have now been successfully rehomed and are enjoying life in their forever homes,” said a Dogs Trust spokesperson. Some remain in care, including those who gave birth while in the charity’s custody.

Poodle-Cross Dogs and Social Media Controversy

A viral image of dozens of dogs packed into a living room sparked debate online, with some claiming it was AI-generated. The RSPCA clarified that the photo was genuine, capturing the “staggering reality” of multi-animal incidents, which have risen by 70% in England and Wales since 2021.

The dogs, all poodle-cross breeds known as “doodles,” have become increasingly popular, ranking among the top three crossbreeds in a 2025 Dogs Trust survey. While the RSPCA did not pursue legal action in this case, citing the owners’ “extremely vulnerable nature,” it linked the overcrowding to factors like mental health challenges, financial strain, or substandard breeding practices.

Recent Rescue Highlight

In November, the RSPCA reported rescuing 80 dogs, including chihuahuas, pomeranians, and crossbreeds, from a property in Bedfordshire. One of the most recent rescues, Boone—a poodle-cross dog—was adopted by Dermot Murphy, a former RSPCA inspectorate commissioner, who featured the animal on BBC Breakfast earlier this week.
