Dolce & Gabbana Co-Founder Steps Down as Chair

Stefano Gabbana, one of the founders of Dolce & Gabbana, has resigned as chair of the iconic fashion brand. The shift occurred on January 1, marking the end of his leadership role while he retains his creative position. Alongside Domenico Dolce, Gabbana established the company in 1985, and their collaboration has defined its identity for decades.

Debt and Market Challenges

The brand faces a debt of approximately €450 million, compounded by a broader decline in the luxury retail sector. This downturn is particularly evident in China, where consumer spending has slowed. Gabbana’s decision to step down was communicated to the company in December, with his departure attributed to a natural evolution of its internal structure.

“It’s no secret that the brand is in significant debt,” said fashion analyst Priya Raj. “The brand is privately owned, and Stefano Gabbana holds a 40% stake, as does Domenico Mario Assunto Dolce. The future of these holdings remains unclear.”

Controversies and Brand Resilience

Dolce & Gabbana has weathered notable controversies, including backlash during a Milan Fashion Week show where the male models were predominantly white. Social media critic Bella Hadid publicly called out the brand for this choice. However, Raj noted that the firm has “outlasted cancel culture,” with its bold, Sicilian-inspired designs maintaining a loyal following despite trends in quiet luxury.

“The problem lies more in the financial management than the designs themselves,” Raj added. “They clearly need external support to stabilize their operations.”

Expansion and Strategic Moves

As the brand explores new markets like hospitality and furniture, it recently launched a collection featuring a leopard-print porcelain vase priced at £1,084. This diversification reflects efforts to adapt to changing consumer demands. Meanwhile, the company has engaged a financial advisor and is in ongoing discussions with creditors to address its debt situation.

Founding Legacy and Future Directions

Established in Milan, Dolce & Gabbana rose to fame through high-profile collaborations, such as Madonna’s 1993 “Girlie Show” tour, where the brand created costumes for her “Erotica” album. This partnership helped cement its reputation for provocative, sensual aesthetics, while also introducing more accessible products like sunglasses and perfume. The firm’s statement emphasized that Gabbana’s exit aligns with its organizational development, aiming to streamline leadership and governance.
