Ghanaian footballer killed after armed attackers open fire at team bus

Tragic Incident and GFA Response

Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old Ghanaian player, has passed away following an ambush by armed assailants on his team’s bus. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) conveyed its “profound shock and deep sorrow,” offering “heartfelt condolences” to Frimpong’s family, teammates, and team staff. The association highlighted his potential, noting that his commitment and enthusiasm for football symbolized the league’s spirit.

Attack Details and Club’s Account

According to Berekum Chelsea, the incident occurred as the team returned from a Ghana Premier League match on Sunday. The bus was en route after an away game against Samartex in Samreboi when it was suddenly attacked by masked men armed with guns and assault rifles. The attackers blocked the road to halt the team’s movement, prompting the driver to attempt a reverse. Players and staff then scattered into nearby bushes for safety.

Ongoing Investigations

Authorities have not yet identified or apprehended the suspects. The GFA emphasized the urgency of ensuring justice, stating it is collaborating with relevant agencies and the club. “All necessary measures must be taken to secure justice,” the association said, while also pledging to assess and enhance security protocols for teams traveling across Ghana.

Frimpong’s Career and Loan Status

Frimpong joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January, with plans to remain until the end of the premier league season. During his time with the team, he contributed two goals in 13 appearances. His untimely death has left a void in the league, prompting calls for improved safety measures.
