Gilgo Beach serial killings suspect to be charged in death of eighth victim
Rex Heuermann, the Architect Behind Gilgo Beach Murders, Faces New Charges in Eighth Victim’s Death
The BBC has learned that Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old New York architect, is set to plead guilty to the death of an eighth victim in the Gilgo Beach killings. Heuermann, who was arrested in 2023, had previously denied guilt in seven murders spanning from 1993 to 2011.
Lawyer John Ray, representing several of the victims’ families, confirmed to the BBC that Heuermann will enter a guilty plea during a court session on Wednesday. The plea is expected to cover the death of Karen Vergata, whose partial remains were identified in 2023. Vergata’s body was discovered on a New York beach after she disappeared in 1996.
Investigations into the series of murders began in 2010 when police uncovered remains of up to eighteen individuals at Gilgo Beach on Long Island. Officials later linked the discovery to earlier remains found on Fire Island in 1996, suggesting the killings date back decades. Most of the victims’ remains were located near Heuermann’s Long Island residence, according to authorities. The women are thought to have been sex workers at the time of their deaths.
Heuermann was apprehended outside his Manhattan office in July 2023 and initially charged with the murders of three women: Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Costello, 27. Over the next 18 months, additional charges were added for the deaths of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; Jessica Taylor, 20; Valerie Mack, 24; and Sandra Costilla, 28. Vergata, the eighth victim, was 34 when she vanished.
Prosecutors in Suffolk County revealed they found a document believed to be part of Heuermann’s crime planning. The document included columns for “problems” and “supplies,” with entries such as “DNA,” “tire marks,” and “blood stains.” It also detailed methods he allegedly studied for killing and insights from prior murders.
“We are preparing to announce a major development in the homicide investigation,” said a Suffolk County District Attorney’s office post on social media, referencing a news conference scheduled for Wednesday following the court appearance.
