Hegseth asks US Army’s top general to step down
Hegseth Requests Army Chief of Staff Resignation
According to CBS News, the U.S. Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has requested Randy George’s resignation as the Army’s top general. This follows a statement from Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s spokesperson, who shared on social media that George will retire from his role as the 41st Army Chief of Staff immediately.
George, a graduate of the West Point military academy, was appointed to the position in 2023 by former President Joe Biden. His tenure as an infantry officer spanned conflicts in the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The exact reason for his departure is unclear, though a senior defense official told CBS that leadership adjustments were necessary.
“We are grateful for his service, but it was time for a leadership change in the Army,” the official stated.
The Pentagon expressed appreciation for George’s decades of service, with Parnell noting, “The Department of War is grateful for General George’s decades of service to our nation. We wish him well in his retirement.”
George will be succeeded by Army Vice Chief of Staff Christopher LaNeve, who will serve as acting chief. Parnell highlighted LaNeve’s experience, stating he is “a battle-tested leader with decades of operational experience and is completely trusted by Secretary Hegseth to carry out the vision of this administration without fault.”
US media reported that LaNeve will assume the role temporarily. Meanwhile, West Point shared photos of George engaging with troops, emphasizing his “experience-driven guidance” for cadets. Hegseth’s recent actions include removing over a dozen senior military figures, such as the Chief of Naval Operations and the Air Force’s Vice Chief of Staff.
