The Hip Hop Alliance confirmed the passing of Afrika Bambaataa, a key figure in the origins of hip-hop, at the age of 67. The organization highlighted his role in creating a “worldwide movement centered on peace, unity, love, and enjoyment,” praising his contributions to hip-hop’s growth as a musical and cultural phenomenon.

Early Life and Influence

Born as Lance Taylor to Jamaican and Barbadian immigrant parents in the Bronx, he came of age during the black liberation movement. As a teenager, he was part of the Black Spades gang, later using his leadership to establish the Universal Zulu Nation, aiming to steer youth away from violence into creativity.

Legacy and Impact

Bambaataa’s 1982 track “Planet Rock” brought international acclaim and is often credited with defining the sound of hip-hop in the 1980s. His vision for hip-hop transformed the Bronx borough into “the cradle of a culture that now spans the globe,” said Reverend Dr Kurtis Blow Walker, the executive director of Hip Hop Alliance.

Throughout the 1980s and onwards, Bambaataa worked with artists like James Brown and John Lydon, contributing to politically driven initiatives such as the 1985 anti-apartheid anthem “Sun City.” He remained a central figure in the hip-hop scene, bridging music and social advocacy.

Controversies and Later Years

Bambaataa led the Universal Zulu Nation until 2016, resigning following abuse claims from the 1980s and 1990s. He dismissed the accusations, calling them “unfounded and a desperate effort to undermine my hip-hop legacy at this stage.”

Death and Final Case

TMZ was the first to report his death, stating Bambaataa passed away in Pennsylvania due to complications from cancer on Thursday. In 2025, a civil lawsuit against him for child sexual abuse and trafficking concluded with his loss after he missed court appearances, The Guardian noted.
