Lifeguard Rescues Surged in 2025, Says RNLI

Annual Rescue Numbers More Than Doubled

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) reported a significant rise in lifeguard interventions in 2025, with rescue operations surpassing 36,000 instances—nearly double the 17,000 recorded in 2024. This surge is attributed to favorable weather conditions and a higher number of UK residents opting for domestic holidays.

Expansion and Service Scope

Since 2001, the RNLI has expanded its coastal safety efforts, initially covering beaches in Bournemouth, Weymouth, and Cornwall. Today, it safeguards over 245 locations across the UK and Channel Islands, positioning it as the country’s largest lifeguard service provider. The organization has documented 2,165 lives saved and aided nearly 500,000 individuals through water rescues, including child recovery and medical assistance.

“RNLI lifeguard statistics fluctuate annually based on weather patterns. Last year, a largely sunny summer led to increased beach activity,” said Peter Dawes, the RNLI’s Lifeguard General Manager. “Additionally, economic factors play a role—more visitors staying in the UK for holidays directly boost our workload,” he added.

Historical Trends and Pandemic Impact

Rescue numbers reached a peak during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, with over 40,000 individuals saved each year. Travel restrictions worldwide prompted a surge in UK-based coastal tourism, contributing to this high demand. Dawes emphasized, “For the past 25 years, RNLI lifeguards have protected millions of beachgoers, and this commitment will continue as we prepare for the summer season.”

Origins and Modern Operations

Established in 1824, the RNLI began with a single lifeboat and a volunteer-driven mission to rescue maritime lives. Currently, it operates 238 lifeboat services across the UK and Ireland, maintaining its legacy of coastal safety through dedicated personnel and community support.
