Authorities have charged a Sudanese man, Alnour Mohamed Ali, in connection with the deaths of two men and two women who drowned during a Channel crossing attempt on Thursday. The incident occurred as the group tried to board a water taxi off the coast of Saint Etienne-au-Mont, close to Calais.

Ali, 27, is accused of operating the vessel between France and the United Kingdom. The exact circumstances of the tragedy are under review, with investigators examining the events that prompted the boat’s launch.
