Man Completes Record-Breaking Mountain Challenge After 742 Climbs in One Year

Breaking the Record with Determination

A Welsh man has concluded an extraordinary feat by scaling the country’s tallest mountain, Pen y Fan, for the 742nd time in a single year. Chris Daniel, who earned the nickname “Pen y Fan Dan” on social media, maintained a rigorous routine of two ascents and descents per day, each covering the 886-meter (2,906-foot) route. His relentless efforts culminated in a new benchmark, surpassing the prior record of 365 climbs set by Des Lally in 2019.

Legacy of Love and Loss

Daniel embarked on this challenge in April 2023 as a tribute to his late wife, Rita, who passed away from bowel cancer in 2016. Before his final climb, he reflected on the emotional weight of the journey, quipping,

“I’d like to think the mountain will be crying today because we’re splitting up.”

Rita’s diagnosis in 2012, at the age of 48, sparked her commitment to raising awareness about the disease, a cause Daniel continues to champion.

Weather Woes and Human Support

While his dedication was unwavering, the harsh conditions of the mountain posed significant obstacles. Daniel described the winter months as “really, really tough,” recounting how relentless rain and hail forced him to wear ski goggles during climbs. He noted the unpredictability of the weather, saying,

“The forecast on the mountain is very, very irregular. You can go up thinking it’s going to be okay.”

Despite the challenges, he met thousands of supporters who shared his resolve.

From Fear to Triumph

Before tackling Pen y Fan, Daniel overcame his phobias through alternative pursuits, such as handling Nicaraguan tarantulas and performing loop-the-loop maneuvers in biplanes. His initial reluctance to climb the peak 50 times stemmed from a preference for cycling, but a conversation with Lally on the 25th climb shifted his perspective.

“On the way down, I thought, ‘Wow, I want to have a crack at this.'”

Encouraging Health Awareness

Through his journey, Daniel aimed to inspire others by highlighting the importance of bowel screening. He emphasized that the test, available to those aged 50 and above in Wales, is a “life-saver” for many.

“Even now, a third of people aren’t doing that,”

he remarked, underscoring his hope to honor Rita’s legacy by motivating others to take action.

Looking Ahead

Though Daniel plans to take a break from the climbs unless conditions are favorable, he remains passionate about the community spirit the mountain fosters.

“I’ve already been in floods of tears. There’ll be more water coming out of me today than the mountain.”

His goal, he said, is to keep Rita’s memory alive and continue uplifting those who share similar struggles.
