Man fined after breaking into viral hippo Moo Deng’s enclosure
Thai authorities imposed a $300 penalty on a man who unlawfully entered the habitat of Moo Deng, a rare baby pygmy hippo and global social media star. Narongwit Chodchoy, director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, shared this update with AFP, stating the individual was convicted by a local court for trespassing into the enclosure last month. Local media released video evidence showing the man using a tablet to capture Moo Deng’s movements within her pen.
Zoo director emphasizes animal rights protection
“We train staff on protocols for animal escapes, but now we must also prepare for handling intruders,” Chodchoy explained. “This incident taught us a lesson—no one, whether in the wild or in captivity, should breach an animal’s rights.”
The zoo confirmed Moo Deng remained unharmed following the breach, though she appeared briefly unsettled. The facility, located approximately two hours from Bangkok, has since intensified security measures to prevent future unauthorized access. Chodchoy added that the fine serves as a deterrent to ensure the safety of all zoo inhabitants.
Moo Deng’s viral rise and cultural impact
Moo Deng, whose name translates to “bouncy pig,” captured international attention in July 2024 after the zoo shared her playful videos online. The content rapidly gained traction, sparking memes and boosting visitor numbers to record levels. Thousands of fans now visit the zoo weekly to see the beloved hippo. Merchandise inspired by her has also been developed, reflecting her widespread appeal.
