Manhattan Prosecutor Launches Inquiry into Sexual Misconduct Allegations Against Congressman Eric Swalwell
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has begun an investigation into claims of sexual misconduct against US congressman Eric Swalwell. Four women have reported incidents involving harassment and alleged rape, with one incident reportedly occurring in New York City. Swalwell, a prominent figure in California’s gubernatorial race, has denied the accusations, promising to “defend himself with facts.”
“We urge survivors and anyone with information about these allegations to reach out to our Special Victims Division,” stated the prosecutor’s office. “Our team of trained professionals is prepared to support you in a trauma-informed, survivor-centered approach.”
Swalwell, who was elected in 2012 to represent a district near San Francisco, has not yet responded to the BBC’s request for comment. The investigation follows his public denial of the allegations, with the congressman emphasizing his dedication to protecting women over nearly two decades of public service.
Allegations Emerge in San Francisco Chronicle Report
Details of the claims surfaced on Friday through a former staff member who spoke to the San Francisco Chronicle. The woman described how Swalwell began making inappropriate remarks shortly after hiring her for his district office in Castro Valley. She alleged he solicited her for sex and sent explicit messages, with two incidents involving assault. The first occurred in September 2019 following a drinking session, while the second took place in 2024 after a charity event in New York.
“On both occasions, I was too drunk to consent,” she told the newspaper.
The BBC has not independently confirmed her account or identity, though it has contacted her attorney for further details. CNN also published reports from four women accusing Swalwell of sexual misconduct. His legal team reportedly sent cease-and-desist letters to two of the accusers, according to the network.
Impact on Gubernatorial Campaign
Swalwell’s denials came just hours after the allegations surfaced, with the congressman addressing them in a Facebook video. “I am not claiming to be flawless,” he said. “I have made judgment errors, but those are between me and my wife. I deeply apologize for placing her in this situation.”
The accusations have disrupted his campaign for California governor, which was already highly competitive. Prominent supporters, including Senator Adam Schiff and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have withdrawn their backing. The timing is critical, as the race to replace outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom approaches its final stages, with mail ballots set to be distributed weeks before the 2 June election.
Opinion polls suggest Swalwell was positioned as a top contender among Democratic candidates, but the allegations now threaten his standing in a closely watched primary race.
