Murder arrest over businessman’s death in 2004
More than two decades after the killing of a respected Leeds businessman, a 55-year-old man has been taken into custody on suspicion of his murder. The incident occurred on 16 February 2004, when John Luper, 57, was fatally attacked during a robbery at his home in Sandmoor Drive, Alwoodley.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed that the suspect was detained in Bradford following forensic analysis of evidence. The attack took place as Luper walked his dog near a neighbor’s driveway at around 11:30 PM. He was pulled into his residence by masked attackers, who bound his wife, daughter, and their au pair with duct tape in an upstairs room.
The intruders stole approximately £100,000 in cash and jewelry, including a valuable Cartier timepiece, before fleeing the scene. Luper was discovered by his wife and daughter in a downstairs room after they managed to untie themselves. Despite emergency efforts, he was declared dead at the location.
Det Supt Damian Roebuck emphasized that the investigation remains focused on securing justice for John Luper and his family. “Over 22 years have passed since his violent death, yet our determination to uncover the truth has not wavered,” he said. The officer urged witnesses to share details about anyone who inquired into Luper’s business activities or attempted to sell jewelry around the time of the crime.
