Officer sacked for ‘appalling’ remarks on Panorama

Metropolitan Police Disciplinary Action

In October 2025, a BBC investigation uncovered prejudiced remarks made by PC Charlie Cano, a police officer stationed at Charing Cross station, during an undercover segment on Panorama. The incident led to his immediate termination, with no prior notice given. The accelerated misconduct hearing concluded that Cano displayed disrespectful behavior and boasted about applying force to a teenage female detainee, violating professional conduct standards.

Cano was part of the Central West Command Unit, and his actions were described as “appalling” by a senior officer. Unaired footage, captured by an undercover journalist in the custody suite, revealed his discriminatory comments, prompting an urgent suspension. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that he was removed from duty following the discovery.

“The behavior recorded by the journalist was truly appalling,” said Commander Simon Messinger, who emphasized that Cano’s conduct breached norms of respect, authority, and equality. He noted that eight officers have already been dismissed for their “unacceptable conduct” at the station, underscoring the severity of the issue.

Messinger highlighted the Met’s commitment to addressing the matter, stating that the force is supporting an ongoing inquiry by the Independent Office for Police Conduct. This investigation aims to examine the behavior of “a number of officers” linked to the station. He added that efforts are being made “tirelessly” to enhance standards and reshape the culture within London’s policing framework.
