One dead after bus carrying British tourists crashes in Canary Islands, officials say

A fatal accident occurred in La Gomera, part of the Canary Islands, when a bus transporting British tourists plunged into a ravine. Local emergency services confirmed the incident, stating that one individual lost their life and 27 others were injured. The crash happened near San Sebastián de La Gomera, as reported by Spanish outlet El Mundo.

Incident Details

The bus fell from a 10-meter height on the GM-2 road, a winding mountain path known for its sharp turns. An image shared by emergency services suggests the crash occurred close to a hairpin bend. At the time of the accident, 28 people were on board, including 27 British tourists and the driver.

“The bus passengers were staying at a resort on the island,” said Héctor Cabrera, head of emergency operations in La Gomera, during a broadcast on public broadcaster TVE.

Emergency responders reported that most of the injured were transported to Hospital Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, located on the island’s eastern side. Two critically hurt individuals were airlifted to hospitals in nearby Tenerife. Officials noted that three of the injured are in serious condition.

Response from Authorities

Fernando Clavijo, president of the Canary Islands, extended his condolences to the victims and their families. His statement emphasized the community’s solidarity in the wake of the tragedy. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.
