Payments for children and 100 new GPs in Plaid election manifesto

Plaid Cymru’s Election Manifesto: Childcare Payments and 100 New GPs

Plaid Cymru has introduced a bold plan to address healthcare and childcare challenges, aiming to secure a significant impact if it wins the upcoming Senedd election. Party leader Rhun ap Iorwerth presented the manifesto in Wrexham, framing it as a “radical and responsible” approach to governance.

Among the proposals, the party pledges weekly payments of £10 for children in low-income families aged 0-6, targeting up to 15,000 beneficiaries. This initiative seeks to alleviate financial burdens on families while expanding access to early care. Additionally, Plaid aims to add 100 new general practitioners to tackle out-of-hours medical needs and reduce NHS waiting times.

“A radical and responsible plan for government.”

Complementing these measures, a national commission will be formed to lay the groundwork for future Welsh independence. However, the party has decided against holding a referendum on independence during its initial term, focusing instead on core priorities like improving healthcare, supporting families, creating jobs, and raising educational standards.

Opinion polls indicate Plaid Cymru is in a tight race with Reform for the 7 May Senedd election. Despite never having won a seat in Cardiff Bay, the party has historically backed Labour-led administrations, positioning itself as a key player in Welsh politics.
