Russia expels British diplomat over spying allegations

The Russian government has directed a British embassy employee to depart the country, citing espionage accusations as the reason. This move is part of a recurring cycle of diplomatic expulsions between the two nations. According to state media, the Federal Security Service (FSB) alleges the individual submitted misleading information during their visa application and sought confidential details during informal economic discussions.

The UK Foreign Office has denounced the action, labeling it “complete nonsense” and accusing Russia of a “coordinated effort to harass British diplomats.” In a statement, they emphasized that Moscow has been “spreading malicious and entirely unfounded claims about their work.” The office also asserted its stance against “intimidating British embassy staff and their families,” stating it would not tolerate such behavior.

“The UK does not stand for intimidation of British embassy staff and their families,” said a spokesperson for the Foreign Office.

Russian state news agency Tass reported that the diplomat “deliberately provided false information” to secure a permit, with “indications of intelligence operations” identified. His name was revealed in Russian state media, signaling the official nature of the accusation. Following the decision, the UK’s charge d’affaires, Danae Dholakia, was called to the Russian Foreign Ministry, though she reportedly left without making any remarks.

This incident follows a pattern of mutual expulsions. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, diplomatic ties have deteriorated, prompting both nations to eject staff on multiple occasions. Earlier this year, Russia had already expelled a British diplomat over similar charges. In March 2025, two UK officials were sent back under accusations of spying, with the Foreign Office criticizing Moscow for “malicious and baseless accusations” against its personnel.

The UK responded by revoking the accreditation of a Russian diplomat and their spouse, reinforcing its position against intimidation tactics. These actions highlight the escalating tensions between the two countries, which continue to be marked by reciprocal diplomatic measures.
