Scott Mills investigated in 2016 over sexual offence allegations against teenage boy

Scott Mills Sacked by BBC Over Personal Conduct Allegations

The BBC has terminated Scott Mills’ contract following claims about his personal behavior, though the specifics remain undisclosed. The decision was announced on Monday, marking the end of Mills’ tenure as host of the Radio 2 breakfast show. His final broadcast was on 24 March, concluding with a casual “Back tomorrow.” Gary Davies took over the next day, stating he was “in for Scott Mills.”

Earlier Investigation Closed in 2019

Mills was previously scrutinized by the Metropolitan Police in 2016 over allegations of serious sexual misconduct involving a teenage boy. The case, which spanned incidents from 1997 to 2000, focused on a man in his 40s who was interviewed under caution in July 2018. The Crown Prosecution Service concluded there was not enough evidence to pursue charges, leading to the investigation’s closure in May 2019. The BBC has yet to clarify whether this probe influenced the recent dismissal.

The sacking follows a series of high-profile scandals within the BBC, including Huw Edwards’ 2024 conviction for child exploitation and Tim Westwood’s October 2024 charges of multiple sexual offenses. Mills, who joined Radio 2 in 2022 after replacing Steve Wright, has been with the corporation for over two decades. His 2024 salary, reported at £355,000–£359,999, placed him among the top 11 earners at the BBC.

In a staff email, Lorna Clarke, BBC’s director of music, described the dismissal as “a shock.” She noted the impact on both colleagues and listeners, vowing to provide updates on the show’s future. Mills had also contributed to Eurovision semi-finals and appeared in a Traitors skit during Comic Relief. Prior to his Radio 2 role, he hosted Radio 1’s Official Charts from 2018 to 2022 and had a weekend show on BBC Radio 5 Live.

As a prominent BBC figure, Mills’ departure signals a significant development for the corporation under current director general Tim Davie, who is set to leave later this week. The BBC has not yet responded to inquiries about the 2016 police probe’s connection to his sacking.
