Stella McCartney’s clifftop ‘forever home’ gets planning consent

The council has given the go-ahead to Stella McCartney and Alasdhair Willis’ project for a residence on the edge of Loch Ailort, a sea loch west of Fort William. Despite facing over 65 objections, the plans were approved with conditions. Critics highlighted issues related to the property’s scale, aesthetic, and potential effects on the local environment and natural habitats.

Located on Roshven’s rocky headland, Commando Rock, the site has historical ties to military training. A prior owner began construction in the early 2000s but halted the project, leaving behind some low stone walls. The current proposal builds on that foundation while avoiding the removal of existing pine trees, which had sparked prior disputes.

The design incorporates natural Scottish stone and a turfed roof, aiming to blend with the surroundings. A spokesperson for the couple emphasized that the property would be “barely visible” due to its location and the landscape’s contours. The house is intended as a “family, forever home,” contrasting with typical holiday residences in the area.

Highland Council’s south planning applications committee approved the plans on Wednesday, subject to several requirements. These include measures to reduce light pollution from external lighting, as well as ensuring sewage and surface water drainage do not affect the cliff edge. Additionally, a licence from Scotland’s NatureScot is needed because the site supports otter populations.

Fort William and Ardnamurchan Green Party councillor Kate Willis advocated for stricter conditions, requesting a delay to allow for a site visit. However, her proposal was not adopted by the committee. Highland Independent councillor Thomas MacLennan noted that the new design would “sit more comfortably” within the landscape than earlier proposals.

“It will be secluded and barely visible due to the site’s contours, including views from the water.” “We look forward to continuing to engage with the local community as we progress our development and when we move into our new home.”

Stella McCartney, daughter of former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, has gained international acclaim as a pioneering fashion designer. She received a CBE in 2022 for her contributions to the industry and sustainability. Her husband, Alasdhair Willis, serves as a creative director at Adidas.

The project also plans to utilize renewable energy sources, aligning with McCartney’s commitment to eco-friendly practices. While the approval marks a significant step, the couple remains open to further dialogue with the community as the development moves forward.
