Troy the parrot home safe after Dublin Airport adventure
Alexandrine Parakeet Reunited with Owner After Airport Mishap
A parrot lost at Dublin Airport has been successfully returned to its owner after a series of coordinated efforts by staff and the public. The bird, an Alexandrine parakeet, was given the temporary name “Troy” by airport personnel in tribute to Republic of Ireland footballer Troy Parrott. The incident occurred near Terminal One on Easter Sunday when airport police located the parrot during a routine check.
How the Reunion Happened
While at the airport police station, the parrot received care, including fruit, water, and toys. A temporary enclosure was built by the Airport Police K9 unit to ensure her comfort. Her owner, Gheorghe, was identified through her tag number and her vocal reaction to being called Lola. In a social media post on Tuesday, the airport shared that Lola is now “back home with her pal.”
“She seemed delighted her shift was finally over,” remarked airport staff, highlighting the parrot’s apparent relief after being reunited with her owner.
Earlier this year, a similar incident saw a parrot attempt to take flight from the main runway. The African grey, named Hugo, was spotted during a safety inspection by a firefighter. In August 2025, another surprise visitor landed at the airport—a chatty parrot not scheduled for any flight.
Previous Airport Parrot Incidents
Notably, in 2019, a parrot attempted to escape from the main runway and was later reunited with its owner. The airport has also humorously referenced the bird’s nickname, joking about renaming the facility to “Troy Parrott Airport” following a hat-trick by the striker against Hungary. The social media team has since repeated the joke after recent matches.
