Trump endorses ex-UK political aide Steve Hilton for California governor
US President Donald Trump has lent his support to Steve Hilton, a former senior advisor to the late British Prime Minister David Cameron, in the race for California’s governorship. This endorsement introduces a new dynamic to a race characterized by its volatility in a state that overwhelmingly favors Democrats. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump lauded Hilton, stating he would “be a great governor.”
California’s June 2 primary features 10 candidates, with the top two vote-getters—regardless of political affiliation—advancing to the general election. While Republicans have not captured a statewide office in the state since the early 2000s, Trump’s backing may shift the momentum. Hilton, who resides in California, previously worked as a key strategist for Cameron from 2010 to 2012 before diverging from the Conservative leader’s policies.
“Democrats have done an absolutely horrendous job” in California, Trump claimed, adding that “people are fleeing” the state due to its governance. This sentiment contrasts with the current Democratic dominance in state politics.
Hilton’s campaign centers on reducing taxes, streamlining the state budget, and easing financial burdens for families. He also serves as a visiting scholar at Stanford University and has applied for US citizenship. His platform has drawn attention, particularly in light of a March poll by the University of California, Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies, which suggested Republicans could challenge Democratic frontrunners.
The poll indicated that Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, another Republican candidate, were outperforming Democratic contenders. This unexpected result alarmed Democratic officials, prompting calls for some candidates to withdraw. Among the Democrats, Congressman Eric Swalwell, former congresswoman Katie Porter, and billionaire climate advocate Tom Steyer received the most support, according to the survey.
Despite the endorsement, Trump’s influence might not guarantee Hilton’s victory. The race remains competitive, with Democrats still holding a strong base in the liberal-leaning state. If Hilton faces a Democratic opponent in November, his success will depend on whether his message resonates beyond the Republican base.
