US Coast Guard Launches Criminal Inquiry into Michigan Woman’s Vanishing in Bahamas
A criminal probe has been initiated by the US Coast Guard following the reported disappearance of Lynette Hooker, an American woman, in the Bahamas. The incident occurred during a holiday trip with her husband, as confirmed by a Coast Guard official to the BBC on Wednesday. According to Brian Hooker, her spouse, Lynette fell from an 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy while they were sailing near Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands. Strong currents carried her out to sea, he explained to authorities.
Brian Hooker recounted that they departed Hope Town for Elbow Cay on Saturday evening, and Lynette lost her grip on the boat’s keys before the accident. After the incident, he paddled the vessel to shore, arriving at the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard around 4 a.m. local time on Sunday. There, he informed a staff member of his wife’s absence, prompting an alert to authorities.
Family and Authorities Seek Answers
“I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy,” Brian Hooker said in a statement shared with CBS News. “Despite our efforts to locate her, the winds and currents drove us apart. My sole focus remains on finding her.”
Lynette’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, expressed confusion over the event, stating that her mother was a seasoned sailor and skilled swimmer. “How could she have fallen overboard and vanished?” she asked, urging a comprehensive investigation. The Royal Bahamas Police Force has been conducting searches, though it did not immediately respond to the BBC’s request for further details.
As of Tuesday, the Bahamas police noted their ongoing inquiry and collaboration with multiple agencies to locate the missing woman. The Coast Guard has not disclosed specific details about the case, leaving the public to await more updates from the investigation.
