Chelsea’s Fernandez dropped after ‘crossing a line’

Chelsea’s Fernandez Dropped Following Comments on Future

Enzo Fernandez, the Argentine midfielder who helped Argentina secure World Cup glory in 2022, has been left out of Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures. Manager Liam Rosenior stated that Fernandez’s remarks about his potential departure from the club have led to his exclusion for the FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale and the Premier League clash with Manchester City on 12 April.

“It’s disappointing for Enzo to speak that way,” Rosenior noted. “I have no negative words for him, but a line was stepped over in terms of our team’s culture and the direction we’re pursuing. As a player and individual, I hold him in high regard. His frustration stems from his desire to see the club achieve success.”

Rosenior emphasized that the decision involves more than just himself or the sporting directors. The club’s ownership and players are united in this choice. “The door isn’t shut on Enzo,” he added. “This is a temporary measure. We must safeguard our identity, and in this case, a boundary was crossed.”

Fernandez Uncertain Over Chelsea Future

In a recent interview, Fernandez mentioned there had been “no talks” with Real Madrid. However, he also expressed a preference for living in Spain, recalling how Madrid evokes memories of Buenos Aires. “It’s not ideal,” Rosenior said, highlighting the emotional strain from Chelsea’s recent struggles.

Chelsea’s Record Spending on Agent Fees

Chelsea’s recent financial strategy has set a new benchmark in the Premier League, with the club investing £460m in agent fees. This marks the highest amount spent by any team in the league’s history. Meanwhile, Fernandez has made 161 appearances since joining the Blues for a British record £107m transfer in January 2023.

Club’s Struggles and Cucurella’s Ambiguity

Chelsea’s performance in the Champions League has been a source of concern. The team suffered a 8-2 aggregate defeat in their last-16 match against Paris St-Germain, a loss that followed four consecutive Premier League games without a win. Defender Marc Cucurella, too, hinted at uncertainty, suggesting a return to Barcelona might be in his future. Yet he clarified his commitment to Chelsea, stating he would prefer to wait “a few years” before considering a move.

“The players were motivated to make a significant impact in the Champions League,” Rosenior explained. “Enzo and Marc’s comments both originated from that ambition. They come from a good place, wanting the club to succeed. However, during these challenging moments, we need greater emotional cohesion as a squad.”

Chelsea’s Position in the League

Since Rosenior took charge in January, Chelsea have earned 10 victories in 19 matches, while suffering seven defeats and two draws. They currently occupy sixth place in the Premier League, trailing fourth-placed Aston Villa by six points in the race for a Champions League berth. With the FA Cup quarter-final looming, questions remain about whether Port Vale can upend the Blues in this critical match.
