Classy Cameron becomes two-weight world champion

Victory in London

British boxer Chantelle Cameron secured the vacant WBO light-middleweight world title with a commanding performance, overcoming Czech opponent Michaela Kotaskova by unanimous verdict. The contest, held at the Olympia in London, featured three-minute rounds—an unusual format compared to the traditional two-minute structure in women’s boxing. Cameron’s 34-year-old body delivered relentless pressure, particularly in the ring’s interior, as she dominated the action from start to finish.

“It feels amazing. I’m going back to my family and I’ve got the world title,” Cameron reflected. “I’m going to have to get used to it [three-minute rounds], it’s the first time I’ve done it and you have to pace yourself. Sometimes I was rushing it and I need to get used to it.”

Cameron’s decision to relinquish her WBC light-welterweight title in October sparked controversy, as she protested against the disparity in rules between men’s and women’s boxing. The extra minute per round seemed to benefit her, allowing her to maintain composure and deliver precise strikes. Her technical superiority was evident as she targeted Kotaskova’s head and body with sharp, calculated punches, eventually wearing down the previously undefeated Czech fighter by the fifth round.

Future Challenges

After the victory, Cameron confirmed her next step will be a showdown with Mikaela Mayer, the reigning WBA and WBC light-middleweight champion. Both fighters are signed with Most Valuable Promotions, which Mayer hinted could streamline negotiations. “I’ve wanted this fight for ages and we should give the fans a great fight in women’s boxing,” Mayer said. “We should bring it to Britain.”

Mayer, who is 35, praised Cameron’s style, noting the potential for an exciting rivalry. “We have the styles for a very exciting match-up. It’s going to be easy to make because we’re both with MVP,” she added.

Dolan’s Defeat

Earlier in the evening, Emma Dolan’s attempt to claim a world title ended abruptly. The 27-year-old, who had held the British super-flyweight title since 2024, was stopped in the third round by IBF super-flyweight champion Irma Garcia. Garcia, 17 years Dolan’s senior, showcased her experience by flooring the Norfolk fighter twice in round two—first with a sharp overhand left, then with a clean one-two combination. Dolan managed to survive the count after another overhand left in the third, but her corner decided to end the bout shortly thereafter.

This loss marked Dolan’s first defeat in nine professional fights, highlighting the gap between her and the elite level of world champions. The bout underscored the challenges faced by emerging fighters in the super-flyweight division, where seasoned operators like Garcia can quickly assert dominance.
