England fitness issues put to bed – Edwards
England Fitness Concerns Now Resolved – Edwards
As England prepares to host the Women’s T20 World Cup this summer, head coach Charlotte Edwards has confirmed that the team has overcome key fitness challenges. The issue of physical readiness had long been a topic of discussion prior to her appointment, with past concerns highlighted by the squad’s early exit from the previous edition of the tournament just under 18 months ago.
Former spinner Alex Hartley once criticized players for not meeting fitness standards, suggesting they were “letting the team down.” This theme resurfaced during the Ashes in January 2025, where a lack of athleticism was noted, and former coach Jon Lewis linked it to differing cultural approaches between the UK and Australia.
“We’re in a really good place. The results are all so high. I couldn’t be more chuffed – we’ve made real progress,” Edwards said on a BBC Test Match Special debate show.
Edwards, who took over from Lewis last year, implemented strict fitness benchmarks to address these concerns. She emphasized that the focus extends beyond track-based endurance, highlighting improvements in other physical aspects. “Once you set out the expectation, the players know what they need to do,” she added. “We’ve added sort of benchmarks over the winter, and they’ve fully bought into that.”
Edwards will mark her first anniversary in charge this Wednesday. She praised the squad’s fielding performance during a recent intra-squad series, calling it “some of the best I’ve seen” from the group. The coach’s efforts have seemingly paid off, with the team now demonstrating enhanced physical standards ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
