English trio vie for Champions League semi-finals

English trio battle for Champions League semi-final spots

The clocks have advanced, signaling the arrival of the season’s most intense phase. For Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United, this means a high-stakes clash in the Women’s Champions League quarter-finals. Last week’s matches saw these teams secure their positions in the knockout stage, but the outcomes remain uncertain as the second legs approach.

Champions League quarter-final showdowns

Arsenal and Chelsea are set to meet again in the second leg of their tie, with the Gunners holding a 3-1 lead from the first match at Emirates Stadium. However, Chelsea’s confidence remains high, as they aim to overturn the deficit. Defender Lucy Bronze expressed belief in their ability to do so, recalling their previous comeback against Manchester City.

“We know we can go to Stamford Bridge and turn this result around,” Bronze said. “We did it last year against City so there’s no reason we can’t do it again. We’ve got big players with big personalities who have been in this position before, and they know how to win games. We know we’ve got it in us.”

Striker Sam Kerr, who missed the initial encounter due to the Asian Cup, returned with a goal against Aston Villa in the WSL. Her presence could be pivotal for Chelsea as they push for progression. Meanwhile, Arsenal, after a 5-2 victory over Tottenham in a warm-up, are staying focused on the challenge ahead.

Manchester United’s uphill task

Manchester United face a daunting challenge against Bayern Munich, having suffered a 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford. The team must now secure a victory in Munich to make history and advance to the semi-finals. Marc Skinner emphasized their determination, stating they aim to progress beyond mere participation.

“We’re not a team that just wants to make up the numbers; we want to be in this competition until the latter stages,” Skinner explained. “Even though we lost at home, we still head to Munich believing a first Champions League semi-final is within reach.”

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha highlighted the competitiveness of the tournament, noting that all remaining teams have opportunities to capitalize on mistakes. “No side left in this competition doesn’t give away chances. When it is your day, you can take those opportunities,” he added on Disney+.

Semi-final line-up and future matches

The semi-final draw will finalize on Thursday following the conclusion of the final two quarter-final encounters. Barcelona, the three-time winners, have already advanced after a 6-2 win against Real Madrid. The Wolfsburg vs Lyon tie is tighter, with Lyon holding the home advantage for the second leg.
