Ex-Australia batter Warner charged with drink-driving
David Warner, a former Australia cricketer, has been accused of drink-driving after failing a breath test in Sydney. New South Wales Police confirmed the arrest of a 39-year-old man following a random roadside check in Maroubra, a suburb in eastern Sydney. The individual tested positive initially, and a subsequent breath test at the police station showed a reading exceeding the legal limit by more than double.
“A van was reportedly seen stopping near the testing site before parking,” said NSW Police. “Officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command approached the vehicle and administered a breath test to the driver, a 39-year-old man, which returned a positive result. He was then taken to Maroubra Police Station, where a second test yielded a reading of 0.104.”
Warner is facing a mid-range alcohol concentration charge under New South Wales law, which targets drivers with blood alcohol levels between 0.08 and 0.149. His court date has been scheduled for 7 May. After retiring from international cricket in 2024, Warner now serves as the captain of the Pakistan Super League team Karachi Kings. Their next scheduled match is against Peshawar Zalmi on 9 April.
Warner made 383 appearances across all formats for Australia between 2009 and 2024. The incident marks a new chapter in his post-retirement career, as he prepares for the upcoming league fixtures.
