Guardiola would ‘love’ Silva to stay at Man City

Man City’s Captaincy and Future Uncertain

Bernardo Silva, who joined Manchester City from Monaco in 2017, has made 450 appearances for the club. Despite his long tenure, Pep Guardiola remains hopeful the Portuguese midfielder will conclude his career at the Etihad Stadium, though the final call lies with Silva himself.

“Every compelling narrative eventually reaches its conclusion,” said Guardiola, reflecting on the possibility of Silva’s departure. “But I would love for him to stay and finish his career here. It’s his decision, and I can’t force it.”

Contract Expiry and Transfer Links

Silva’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, sparking speculation about his future. Assistant manager Pep Lijnders recently suggested the nine-year spell could end this summer, noting that “a good story comes to an end.” The player has been linked with moves to La Liga champions Barcelona, Serie A club Juventus, and Major League Soccer teams.

“You never replace a player with the same kind of player because they don’t exist,” Lijnders remarked after City’s FA quarter-final victory over Liverpool. “But every good story comes to an end, and I hope he enjoys the last months of his journey here.”

Guardiola on Silva’s Loyalty

Guardiola admitted uncertainty about Silva’s decision, stating he hadn’t received any confirmation from the captain. “I said a month ago, ‘if you take a decision, I have to be the first to know,’ but he hasn’t shared anything yet,” the manager explained. “It’s not certain he’ll leave, but I don’t know what’s going on. He’ll decide what he wants.”

“I joked with him, saying ‘tell me I deserve it,’ but he didn’t respond. Still, I love this club and would love for him to stay,” Guardiola added. “He’s not the tallest or most muscular player, nor does he score 50 goals a season. But his fire and competitiveness make him invaluable.”

Legacy of a Key Player

Silva, who became City captain following Kevin De Bruyne’s exit, made his 450th appearance for the club in the EFL Cup win against Arsenal last month. Guardiola highlighted Silva’s consistency, noting his presence on crucial stages and his role as a cornerstone of the team. “He’s been an incredible signing for us,” the manager said. “I’m not sure what he’ll do, but I’ll support whatever choice he makes.”
