‘Hungry’ Watkins is man on mission but will Tuchel take notice?

Hungry Watkins on Mission, Tuchel’s Attention in Question

Ollie Watkins has demonstrated a surge in form this season, netting 12 goals in 44 appearances for Aston Villa. With England’s next international fixtures delayed until the summer, Thursday’s match would have provided Thomas Tuchel with a glimmer of hope. The England manager had previously struggled to find a reliable replacement for Harry Kane, whose absence due to World Cup preparations left him with limited options. This was highlighted during friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, where Kane’s side failed to secure goals.

Watkins’ recent performance in the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Bologna has reignited discussions about his World Cup prospects. In a 3-1 victory, the Villa forward showcased his hunger and composure, scoring two goals. Despite being omitted from the expanded 35-man England squad in March—after a goalless run in his last nine Premier League games—his impact in Italy has rekindled interest. Tuchel acknowledged his familiarity with Watkins, stating,

“Watkins is not with us but this is more down to the fact that I know what he can bring to the group—I know him very well.”

Following the setback, Watkins has responded with determination, adding to his tally with a goal against West Ham before the international break. His recent form, including three goals in five games across all competitions, has positioned him as a contender.

“It’s the back end of the season and I’m raring to go,”

he told TNT Sports after Villa advanced closer to a European semi-final.

“I could play another 90 minutes. I’m excited for the next few games. I’m hungry.”

Aston Villa’s European Push

Watkins’ decisive moments came in Bologna’s match, where he capitalized on a defensive error to open the scoring early in the second half. After the Serie A side equalized in the 90th minute, the striker restored Villa’s lead in the 94th minute from a corner, setting up a crucial return leg at Villa Park. His ability to convert chances has been notable, matching his previous 24 European appearances in terms of goal output.

Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin emphasized the timing of Watkins’ resurgence, calling it a “good opportunity” for both club and country.

“There is the possibility of the centre-forward position waiting with England at the World Cup, there’s a chance at securing Champions League football and a possible European final, and here he is scoring two goals and looking very sharp and very lively indeed.”

Nevin noted that Bologna’s attacking approach created favorable conditions for Watkins to shine.

Expert Opinions on His Inclusion

Despite Tuchel’s earlier hesitations, some experts argue Watkins has earned his place. Former England midfielder Owen Hargreaves highlighted his recent display, saying,

“If you score two goals in a European knockout tie, trust me your name is back in the mix.”

Hargreaves pointed out that even players like Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke, who were given chances in Kane’s absence, failed to leave a lasting mark.

Watkins’ consistency under Tuchel has also drawn praise. Former Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov remarked,

“For Watkins, there were so many questions about his performances and scoring goals, but every time Villa need him to produce, he does. That is what makes him first choice.”

His leadership in critical moments, such as the 94th-minute goal, underscores his value as a player who thrives under pressure.
