Iran will play World Cup games in US – Infantino
Iran’s World Cup Matches Confirmed in U.S. by Infantino
Gianni Infantino confirmed that Iran’s World Cup matches will proceed in the U.S., following discussions with President Trump. The FIFA leader stated the games are set according to the original draw, despite ongoing concerns over the nation’s participation. Iran’s matches are scheduled for Los Angeles and Seattle, with opponents including New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt.
The 2026 World Cup, starting on 11 June, is co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Earlier this month, the Iranian football federation hinted at potential relocation, saying it was “negotiating” to move games to Mexico. However, Infantino emphasized the country’s commitment to the tournament, highlighting its strong team.
“Iran will be at the World Cup,” Infantino told AFP. “We’re delighted because they’re a very, very strong team, I’m very happy.”
Infantino, who watched Iran’s 5-0 friendly win against Costa Rica in Turkey on Tuesday, assured that the team’s readiness is confirmed. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum offered support, stating her country is prepared to host Iran’s matches if needed. Yet, Infantino reiterated the games will remain as planned.
US-Israel Tensions and Diplomatic Remarks
Amnesty International warned the World Cup could become a “stage for repression” amid the US-Israel conflict involving Iran. President Trump initially welcomed Iran to the tournament but later suggested they should not be involved “for their own life and safety.”
In response, Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali asserted the nation is not in a position to withdraw from the competition. The federation’s decision to negotiate relocation reflects growing diplomatic pressure, though Infantino remains confident in the event’s progression.
